Maria Joaoa Pires plays Mozart piano concerto No. 20 in D minor K. 466, with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, under the baton of Pierre Boulez. It has been a tradition for the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra since 1991 to commemorate the birth of their orchestra – May 1st, 1882 – with a concert in a different European country each time. In 2003, it was Pierre Boulezs turn to conduct the famous concert in Lisbon at the incredible Jeronimos Monastery that was built on the bank of the River Tage in 1946 upon the initiative of King Manuel 1st. The pianist Maria Joao Pires, a native of the country, gives a moving rendition of the “Concerto No.20″ KV466 by Mozart. This excerpt is the beginning of the third movement : Allegro assai. The whole concert is available in Very High Resolution on medici.tv : www.medici.tv

One of my favourite classical sounds.
I so wish I could play this on my keyboard but I will learn to play it. It’s so chilled out and relaxing.

October 25th, 2009 at 12:03 am

我個人非常喜愛Pires的Mozart!
那種神奇的演奏”顆粒”感~~
還有..她的”平均”…
這種偉大不易的”基本功”在她手下…
簡直自然而然、順理成章!!

I didn’t mean that all his works should be in minor keys! But what we have now is 2 piano concerts out of 27, 2 symphonies out of 60 and the other major works are all written in major keys (concertos) apart from a Mass and a Requiem!

MimasS56- that may be true, but all his fantasias, including k475, k396, k397 are written in minor keys. The number of Mozart symphonies are generally regarded as 41. It’s not certain whether other symphonic works were written by him. Among them, there’s one in A minor, by the way. It was unusual for composers of that period to choose minor keys for their pieces’ home keys. It was commonly thought they’re unstable. It was Mozart who set examples for future Romantic piano concertos.

Major keys compositions were thought to give brilliant melodies.. Haydn though wrote more symphonies in minor keys… But we must confess that minor keys melodies are more popular and “serious” and easier for new listeners!

She deserves a Steinway to sound great, not a Yamaha.
December 12th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
and NOW i get it XD
December 12th, 2009 at 5:14 pm
…..care..? she sounds great ON A YAMAHA.. that’s a plus right..?
December 13th, 2009 at 10:16 pm
all right, she sounds great on a yamaha, and would be much better on a steinway
December 22nd, 2009 at 3:46 am
maybe she choses Yamaha because it’s better for her. Yamaha’s are generally more reliable and less varied than Steinway grands. the keyboard is much more even, which is particularly useful in Mozart, don’t you think? Im sure if she wanted steinway she would have steinway, its not like shes a second rate musician. Richter used Yahama too, excuslively

@musicolorhythm Well, she chooses to play Yamaha, as it’s her favorite….
